The Freedom of Simplicity: Lessons From the Dojo

Something interesting is happening in my golf game.
The more I simplify my swing, the better I seem to play.
And I’m beginning to realize the same thing is happening in my life.
Less Is More
For years, I’ve worked on improving my golf swing.
Different techniques. Different swing thoughts. Trying to control the clubface. Trying to manufacture the perfect shot.
But lately, something has been shifting.
During my most recent round, I discovered a simple feeling that produced some of my best iron shots of the day.
I established a bowed wrist at the top of my backswing, maintained that feeling, and simply rotated through the ball.
No manipulation of the clubface.
No trying to manufacture a draw.
The ball just took off with a beautiful, natural right to left ball flight that makes my heart sing.
It felt almost effortless.
The less I tried to make something happen, the more naturally it happened.
Simplicity Beyond Golf
I’ve been noticing a similar shift in my life.
I’m becoming increasingly drawn to simplicity.
Less clutter.
Fewer distractions.
Less trying to control outcomes.
More space for stillness, awareness, and simply enjoying life.
I love to play golf. I love to practice. I love to write about what I’m learning and share it with others.
I don’t need to make it more complicated than that.
Just as I’m learning to trust my golf swing, I’m learning to trust the unfolding of my life.
Not by doing nothing.
But by doing what I love, giving it my full attention, and letting go of the need to control what happens next.
Allowing Life to Unfold
Maybe that’s what simplicity is teaching me.
I don’t need to add more thoughts to my golf swing.
And I don’t need to add more things to my life.
Sometimes the greatest progress comes from removing what is unnecessary.
Less effort to control.
More freedom to express.
Less clutter.
More clarity.
Less forcing.
More allowing.
I’m still learning this, both on and off the golf course.
But one thing is becoming increasingly clear.
The more I simplify, the more naturally my golf swing and my life begin to unfold.
That is Presence Golf.
That is Presence Life.
Reflection
What might become possible in your life if you stopped adding more and started letting go of what is no longer necessary?
